27 short statements

These statements cover reading, spelling and written expression, phonological processing, memory, sequencing and organisation. Answer for how things usually are when you are working or studying.

This is a free pre-identification tool. It is not a diagnostic instrument, it does not confirm or rule out a diagnosis, and it is not a substitute for a full assessment. The items are aligned to the British Dyslexia Association indicators of dyslexia and the domains Patoss and SASC expect a full diagnostic assessment to cover.

Reading

Reading takes more effort for me than it seems to for others.

I re-read information several times before I take it in.

I lose my place when reading longer passages.

I read slowly when I need to read accurately.

I avoid reading aloud where I can.

Spelling and written expression

Spelling errors happen even when I know the correct word.

Written work takes me longer than I expect it to.

My writing does not reflect how well I understand the subject.

I mix up similar looking words or letters when writing quickly.

I rely heavily on spellcheck, dictation or someone proofreading for me.

I find filling in forms difficult and stressful.

Phonological processing and memory

I stumble over or mispronounce longer, unfamiliar words.

I confuse words that sound similar.

I struggle to remember spoken instructions with several steps.

I need information repeated or written down.

I lose track of what I wanted to say mid sentence.

I need longer processing time when information comes quickly.

Sequencing and organisation

I find note taking in meetings or lectures difficult.

I struggle to organise my ideas into a clear written structure.

I mix up left and right, or times, dates and sequences.

I find it hard to recall names, dates or number sequences.

I find planning longer pieces of work hard to start.

History and impact

Literacy difficulties were noticed during my school years.

Someone in my family has similar reading or spelling difficulties.

I have avoided roles or courses because of the reading or writing involved.

I feel my abilities are underestimated because of my written work.

These difficulties persist even when I am rested and unhurried.

What this screener is based on

Our screeners are free pre-identification tools. They are designed to help you decide whether to explore a full assessment. They are not diagnostic instruments, they do not confirm a diagnosis and they cannot exclude one.

  • British Dyslexia Association indicators of dyslexia Item content is aligned to the BDA's published indicators for children, young people and adults.
  • Patoss and SASC guidance The domains reflect the areas that Patoss and the SpLD Assessment Standards Committee expect a full diagnostic assessment to explore: reading, spelling, written expression, phonological processing, working memory and processing speed.
  • Rose Review (2009) definition of dyslexia The working definition of dyslexia used throughout our service follows the Rose Review.
